Clean Up Jakarta Day

What is Clean Up Jakarta Day?

Clean Up Jakarta Day is an annual gathering of communities, schools, businesses and individuals in the spirit of ‘gotong royong’ for a cleaner and better Jakarta. This year’s event will be held on the morning of Sunday October 8.

We aim to raise awareness of the negative effects of littering, as well as the importance of the 3-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Starting in 2013, this annual event sees thousands of volunteers flocking to the streets in the early morning to pick up trash and clean up the capital. Volunteers not only collect trash, they separate litter found into recyclable and non-recyclable sacks as they clean, educating about the value of trash. This year, the event will target 30,000 volunteers cleaning up at approximately 80 locations.

Clean Up Jakarta Day’s Mission

Jakartans produce over 6,700 tonnes of trash every day, which is the size of one Borobudur Temple every two days! Several tonnes end up on the streets, in the rivers, and eventually in the ocean.

Clean Up Jakarta Day aims to unite members of the public, the government, businesses, schools and communities to spread the message that it is everybody’s job to keep the city clean.
